AN INTERVIEW WITH AMY

WHAT'S YOUR STORY?

I'm a native San Diegan, and grew up in the Mission Hills area. We lived in a house with great views of the downtown skyline, and I could see from my bedroom the take-offs and landings of the airplanes at Lindberg Field.

At age 5, I won a local "coloring contest" sponsored by a kids' television show called The Johnny Downs Show on Channel 10 KOGO.

From that day forward, I knew that I wanted to be known as a creative person-- one who didn't always color inside the lines!

I currently reside in the North County of San Diego with my husband Randy, daughter Samantha, and several rescue dogs. I am most proud of the behavioral dog rescue Better by the Pound, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit we started in 2009. Working with troubled dogs has been a labor of love the entire Davis family.

WHAT ARE SOME OBSTACLES/CHALLENGES YOU'VE FACED?

I fell into fashion and beauty styling as result of literally being in the right place at the right time. The work fit me, my personality, and my strengths. I began photographic styling with a teen clothing line here in San Diego called Izzy Be. Karin Brown, founder and owner of Izzy Be, had confidence in my creative direction and gave me room to learn on the job. It's been an amazing journey, with a steep learning curve at first. But I've gone after my passion full steam ahead, no questions asked, with confidence. It is who I am, and it feeds my soul.I made some mistakes, but I also made a lot of good decisions. That and some hard work, and the rest is history.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.

I am a fashion stylist specializing in Photographic Styling-- story-telling through photographic images. My work involves selecting, coordinating, applying various fashion elements to the models in a photoshoot. Photoshoots can range in character from creative editorial styling to commercial pieces, including magazine features and catalogue work.

My signature style aesthetic is funky and eclectic, incorporated into an always sophisticated and elegant theme. With a love for iconic vintage style and art, I love to blend today’s fashion with items from the past, and produce cutting-edge, contemporary fashion stories.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR ESSENTIAL QUALITIES?

I graduated from the California Culinary Academy as a professional chef in 2000. I feel that this experience, with its focus on hard work, structure, and discipline, really helped me when I launched my business.

Fashion styling requires a highly organized person with a keen eye for detail and the ability to work under pressure. Deadlines are an integral and inescapable part of the job. Having a sense of humor is a big help at times too. As an independent Stylist, like any other business owner, I have to remain self-motivated, reliable, and creative in order to be successful. I've learned to channel my ability to think 'outside of the box' and apply it when making the day to day business decisions.
